Description
DSIP Peptide Overview
DSIP (Delta Sleep Inducing Peptide) is a nonapeptide first isolated in 1977 from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits during induced slow-wave sleep. Its name comes from that original experiment rather than from a settled mechanism; five decades later the peptide remains one of the more unresolved subjects in neuropeptide research, which is part of why it is still studied.
Sleep-Architecture Models
The founding studies reported an increase in delta-wave EEG activity following administration in animal models. Subsequent work has produced mixed results across species and protocols, and current research generally treats the peptide as a modulator rather than a direct sleep-inducing agent.
Neuroendocrine Signalling
Separate from the sleep literature, DSIP has been studied for effects on pituitary hormone release, including reports of altered luteinizing hormone and corticotropin secretion in animal models. Immunoreactive DSIP-like material has been detected in a wide range of peripheral tissues, which complicates any simple central-nervous-system account of the peptide.
Stress and Nociception Research
The peptide also appears in research on stress adaptation, thermoregulation and pain thresholds. Across these areas the reported effects are typically modest and protocol-dependent, and the literature is best read as exploratory.
