Description

Vitamin B12 Overview

Vitamin B12 is supplied here as cyanocobalamin, a cobalt-containing corrinoid compound and the most chemically stable form of the vitamin. Unlike the lyophilized peptides in this catalog it ships as a sterile solution at 1000 mcg per millilitre in a sealed multi-dose vial, ready for use as a reference standard or as a supporting reagent alongside other research compounds.

Cobalamin Cofactor Chemistry

The molecule is built around a corrin ring with a central cobalt atom, which can carry a cyano, methyl, adenosyl or hydroxo group at its upper axial position. Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form that converts in biological systems to the two active cofactors, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.

Two Enzymatic Roles

In mammalian biochemistry, cobalamin serves exactly two enzymes. Methylcobalamin is the cofactor for methionine synthase, which remethylates homocysteine to methionine and links B12 status to folate metabolism and one-carbon transfer. Adenosylcobalamin is the cofactor for methylmalonyl-CoA mutase in the mitochondrion, which converts methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA. Accumulation of methylmalonic acid and homocysteine are the two standard laboratory markers of functional deficiency.

Handling and Light Sensitivity

Cobalamin solutions are photosensitive and degrade on prolonged exposure to light, which is why the solution carries its characteristic deep red colour and should be kept in its carton until use. Store at controlled room temperature.
